THE KIDS OF BHF ZOO ARE ALRIGHT

Editorial

This story is inspired by the movie “Wir Kinder Vom BHF Zoo”. Where I reinterpreted it through the lense of youth aesthetics and its sense of rebellion. Historically, moral principles and political ideologies in Berlin has been oppressing the youth, and diminishing their identity of gender, their sexuality and their personal freedom of expression.
This led to many to resort to forms of escapism through drugs, music or arts. The film follows Christiane and her friends’ effort to rebel and escape the sys- tematic oppressions.
It also focussed on the
influence of David Bowie on Berlin, where his aesthetics, and the camp rock attitude created a stark contrast with the restric- tive and conservative views of Berlin. David Bowie the composer of the soundtrack of the movie in his song

“Boy Keep Swinging”, criticizes the petty-bourgeois mentality of

many people, who were oblivious to the reality of conforming to the ideology of youth, and remained close minded and not willing to change.
